NINGBO International 2007

Location: Ningbo, China

In the fall of 2007, NMDA was one of several Los Angeles based architectural offices selected to design small commercial buildings a part of a larger master plan designed by MADA s.p.a.m. of Shanghai. Led by USC Dean, Qingyun Ma, this office is known in China for its new approach to design that truly leads the way for the entire country. Our project, a 585 square meter, four story mini-tower, will be located along a new pedestrian canal that winds its way through a variety of public and commercial buildings. With ground floor commercial and an elaborate roof terrace, the building will house one single three story bar/restaurant. Pedestrian approach will also be from the opposite side of the building.

In order to simultaneously produce a strong expression and a reasonably economical building, we have designed a simple steel frame building with an aluminum and glass storefront system that sits on the floor slabs while the screen system of superformed aluminum panels is attached to a simple back up frame in front of the exposed slab edges. The plan is shaped in such a way as to form a series of ascending stairs along the canal side of the building.
